The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) have been authorized to procure significant amounts of artillery and small-arms ammunition, reinforcing Finland's military readiness. Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen announced the orders during a press briefing on March 20. ## Artillery Procurement
The FDF is set to acquire 155 mm artillery rounds from Nammo Lapua, with a total investment amounting to EUR 79 million (approximately USD 85.5 million). These artillery rounds will be utilized in the K 83-97 and K 98 towed howitzers, as well as in the K9 self-propelled howitzers (SPHs). Häkkänen emphasized the importance of this purchase, stating, "The adequacy of artillery ammunition is one of the cornerstones of the army's performance, and this decision will secure it." He also highlighted the necessity of maintaining domestic production capacity for critical defense equipment to ensure Finland's military security.
Small-Arms Ammunition Order
In addition to the artillery rounds, the FDF has placed a substantial order for 7.62 mm small-arms ammunition, also from Nammo Lapua. This order is valued at EUR 180 million and will cover ammunition for the 7.62 RK 62 and 7.62 KIV firearms. The deliveries of this ammunition are planned to take place from 2025 to 2028. ## Strategic Partnership
Nammo Lapua has established a strategic partnership with the FDF, focusing on a wide range of ammunition and explosive products. This collaboration is poised to enhance Finland's defense capabilities by ensuring a steady supply of necessary military resources.
The recent moves by Finland reflect a proactive approach to military readiness and defense security, marking a crucial step in the nation’s commitment to strengthening its armed forces. As tensions rise in various parts of the world, the Finnish government remains focused on developing its defense infrastructure and capabilities to better safeguard its national security.
