Norway Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict
Kyiv, Ukraine – March 26, 2025 – In a strong show of solidarity, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide visited Kyiv this week, emphasizing Norway’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Eide stated, “Norway is with Ukraine all the way to victory,” underscoring the gravity of the situation as Russian military aggression continues to pose significant security challenges in Europe.
Just hours before Eide's arrival, reports indicated that Russian missiles and drones struck several Ukrainian towns and critical infrastructure, highlighting the persistent threat faced by Ukraine. Accompanying Eide was Tonje Brenna, Norway's Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion. Their visit was intended to reinforce Norway's support for Ukraine during this critical time.
Acknowledging the Stakes
In his remarks, Eide characterized the conflict in Ukraine as “the most serious European and Norwegian security challenge of our time.” He made this statement on social media, reinforcing the notion that the repercussions of the war extend well beyond Ukraine’s borders and directly impact Norwegian and European security.
The Foreign Minister pointed out that Norway shares a border with Russia, which complicates the regional security landscape. “Russia's brutal war against Ukraine has turned European security thinking upside down,” Eide noted, calling it the most significant threat to European peace in decades.
Increased Support and Funding
Norway is taking substantial steps to bolster its financial assistance to Ukraine, with plans to more than double its support in the coming years. Earlier this month, the Norwegian government announced an increase in funding to 85 billion kroner (approximately €7.24 billion) for the year 2025. Eide emphasized the importance of this assistance, stating, “Norwegian support is more important than ever.”
As part of their ongoing commitment, Eide and Brenna met with Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, during their visit. Eide expressed gratitude to Ukrainian leaders for their resilience and determination in facing Russian aggression, signaling Norway’s readiness to continue support until peace is restored and Ukraine is rebuilt.
Commitment to European Solidarity
The visit highlights Norway's stance on maintaining a united front with Ukraine and European allies in the fight against Russian military actions. “Norway and Europe will not turn our backs on them, rather the contrary,” Eide affirmed. This solidarity is crucial as the international community continues to advocate for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of ongoing challenges.
As Norway moves forward with its strategic plans to assist Ukraine, the commitment from officials such as Eide and Brenna reinforces the message of support and encouragement to Ukrainian efforts in this pivotal moment in history.
