Zelensky Visits Norway for Talks on Ukraine Support

Oslo, Norway – March 20, 2023
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Oslo today for discussions with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere. The meetings are focused on how Norway can enhance its support for Ukraine, both in immediate needs and longer-term strategies.

“I look forward to constructive discussions on how Norway can best provide assistance to Ukraine in both the short term and the long term,” Prime Minister Stoere stated prior to the meetings.

Zelensky’s visit coincides with his scheduled online address to the European summit later today, highlighting the urgency of Ukraine’s situation on the international stage. Additionally, the United Kingdom is hosting military leaders from over 20 nations to deliberate on a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, dubbed the “coalition of the willing.”

Prime Minister Stoere reaffirmed Norway's commitment to Ukraine, noting, "Norway supports Ukraine in its fight to defend itself and is contributing to the effort to achieve a lasting, just peace in the country."

During his visit, Zelensky will engage in several meetings throughout the day. Key members of the Norwegian government, including Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and Defense Minister Tore Sandvik, are expected to meet with members of Zelensky’s delegation.

Norway has been a steadfast ally of Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022. Earlier this month, leaders in the Norwegian parliament announced an increase in aid for Ukraine by 50 billion Norwegian krone (approximately $4.6 billion), raising the total support to 85 billion Norwegian krone (around $7.8 billion) by 2025. This significant boost reflects Norway's ongoing dedication to aiding Ukraine amid the conflict.

In related news, reactions in Kyiv remain cautious regarding recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “great call.” The sentiment in Ukraine has been less enthusiastic, as officials and analysts assess the implications of such discussions for the ongoing conflict.

As Zelensky continues his diplomatic efforts, the focus remains on securing the necessary support for Ukraine’s defense and the pursuit of peace in the region.
