A Taste of Thailand in Tallinn

Thai chef Narong Lasuai, affectionately known as New among his friends, has made Estonia his home for the past eight years. Originally from Udon Thani in Thailand, Narong has embraced Estonian culture while introducing authentic Thai cuisine to Tallinn at his restaurant, New Thai.

Early Experiences in Estonia

Narong moved to Estonia after marrying an Estonian man. Reflecting on his arrival, he recalls the initial cultural adjustments. "Adapting to Estonia wasn’t too difficult for me," he said. "Estonia is quiet – and I like peace." Although he found the locals seemed distant at first, he realized that this demeanor was influenced by Estonia's complex history.

"When I first came to Estonia, people seemed quiet and serious," Narong noted. Over time, he has witnessed a warm reconnection with the community, especially at local markets where he is now recognized and greeted warmly by familiar faces.

Learning the Language

Aiming to integrate into his new environment, Narong began learning the Estonian language before relocating. He started leveraging resources like YouTube to master basic phrases and expressed his desire to communicate respectfully with the locals. Narong believes speaking the language has greatly enhanced his experience in Estonia and deepened his connection with its people.

Family and Cultural Bonds

Narong sends a portion of his earnings back home to support his older sister, who took care of him after their family faced tragedy in a car accident. Sharing his feelings on this responsibility, Narong explained, "In Thailand, social safety nets are minimal. If something goes wrong, you must manage on your own." His support helps not only his sister but also builds a home for their shared future.

Embracing the Estonian Climate

Unlike many expatriates who find the climate challenging, Narong finds joy in Estonia's colder months. "I love Estonia because I love the cold! I prefer it to Thailand's recent heat," he said cheerfully.

Culinary Discoveries

While Narong delights in introducing Thai flavors to Tallinn, he admits that his understanding of Estonian cuisine remains limited. He jokingly stated, "I still don’t know exactly what Estonian food is!" Nevertheless, he is open to trying local dishes, claiming he approaches culinary experiences with an openness to flavors, saying, "I eat what is served, out of politeness."

Contributions to Estonian Society

Through his cooking, Narong aims to share more than just food; he aspires to offer a glimpse into his cultural heritage. "I’m a real, genuine Thai. I smile. That’s what I give to Estonia – I bring a different culture here," he said. His infectious enthusiasm and joy of life have made him a beloved figure in the Estonian culinary scene.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Narong has ambitions of creating a travel company that would connect Estonians with special experiences in Thailand. "If I get tired of running a restaurant, I’d like to take people from Estonia to Thailand to experience authentic culture," he shared.

Narong Lasuai's journey from Thailand to Estonia underscores the power of cultural exchange and the richness it brings to communities. His story is a celebration of love, resilience, and the warmth that transcends borders. As Narong continues to thrive in Estonia, he exemplifies the beauty of embracing both one’s roots and the new experiences that life has to offer.
