Valev Laube: What a Bee Taught Me About Getting Lost on Purpose

Earlier this summer, I was sitting in a garden in Estonia while the northern evening performed its annual refusal to end.
The sun had technically begun setting, but it seemed unwilling to commit. Light remained suspended over the grass, the currant bushes, and the edges of the forest. Everything looked briefly undecided about whether it belonged to afternoon or night.
A bee would not leave me alone.
Not aggressively. It was not charging at me, defending anything, or displaying the slightest interest in my drink. It simply kept looping.
Out and back. A wide arc to the left, a tighter one to the right. A sudden movement toward the bushes, then a lazy curve that returned it to roughly where it had begun.
I did what humans tend to do when confronted with an animal whose business is none of ours: I assigned it a psychological crisis.
Where are you going? Do you even know? Are you lost?
The bee offered no clarification.
I cannot say what that particular bee was doing. It may have been inspecting flowers, following a scent, returning to a nest, or responding to something in the garden that I could not perceive. But its strange geometry made me curious about why bees loop at all.
I began reading about bee navigation and discovered something both humbling and unexpectedly comforting.
Sometimes the loops are not evidence that the bee has lost its way.
They are how it learns where it is.
The Loops Are a Method
When young honeybees first leave a hive, or when experienced bees must learn the surroundings of a hive in a new location, they do not simply accelerate toward the horizon.
They turn back.
Close to the entrance, they hover, move laterally, and face the place they are leaving. Their early movements form short arcs and zigzags. As the flight continues, those arcs expand. The bee rises higher, travels farther, and begins making larger circuits through the surrounding landscape.
Bumblebees perform comparable learning flights around their nests. Researchers have observed them repeatedly orienting toward the nest entrance, first from nearby positions and later from expanding loops that carry them farther into unfamiliar territory. Their bodies, heads, and flight paths work together to gather visual information about the place to which they will eventually need to return.
From the outside, the flight looks indecisive.
From the bee’s perspective, it is reconnaissance.
Bees navigate partly by learning views. They remember the arrangement of landmarks, the shape of the horizon, and the visual relationships surrounding an important location. Their movements generate changes across the compound eyes that help reveal distance and spatial structure. They do not take photographs in the human sense, but the comparison is irresistible: each turn gives the bee another view of home.
The bee is not merely moving through the landscape.
It is using movement to see.
This matters later. Honeybees allowed to complete an initial orientation flight can use what they learned to return from unfamiliar release points, while bees deprived of that experience perform far worse. Even a single short orientation flight can give a bee useful knowledge of landmarks around its home.
The loops are therefore not ornamental. They are not nervous energy before the serious journey begins.
They are how the serious journey becomes possible.
A bee cannot fly confidently away until it has first learned what returning should look like.
When the Known Destination Disappears
A different kind of looping begins when a bee knows where something should be, but arrives to find that it is gone.
In one experiment, researchers trained honeybees to visit an artificial feeder. Once the bees had learned its location and were returning reliably, the feeder was removed.
The bees did not immediately abandon the place. They searched around its former location, flying outward and returning in loops of varying lengths and directions.
When researchers analyzed those paths, they found a pattern associated with what physicists call a Lévy flight: many relatively short movements mixed with occasional much longer ones. Rather than searching at one consistent scale, the bee alternated between examining the likely area closely and making broader movements into new territory.
This is randomness, but not the kind that means nothing.
Imagine looking for a lost key. You begin beside the chair where you last remember seeing it. You check beneath the chair, then the nearby table, then the floor around both. Eventually, you walk into the next room. You return. You search locally again. Then you make another larger jump.
The pattern allows a searcher to inspect the most likely location intensively without becoming permanently trapped there.
A perfectly executed spiral could cover space more efficiently. But perfect spirals demand perfect navigation and reliable perception. Miss the target once, and the spiral may continue expanding without ever crossing it again.
The random looping strategy is less elegant but more forgiving. It continues to perform well even when wind, sensory limits, and navigational errors interfere with the intended path.
That was the detail that stayed with me.
Evolution did not solve uncertainty by making the bee omniscient. It produced a way of searching that remains useful even when the searcher is imperfect.
The strategy does not eliminate error.
It survives it.
Randomness Is Not the Opposite of Intelligence
We often use “random” as an insult.
A random decision is thoughtless. A random career is unfocused. A random journey is one taken by someone who failed to plan properly.
But under conditions of uncertainty, some degree of randomness can be rational.
When the environment is poorly understood and useful things are scattered unpredictably, searching only the nearest area may cause you to overlook opportunities elsewhere. Making only enormous leaps is equally inefficient because you fail to inspect anything carefully. A pattern combining local attention with occasional relocation offers a compromise.
The bee does not know where the missing food has gone. That is precisely why it cannot travel directly toward it.
A straight line is only efficient when the destination is known.
Without that knowledge, directness becomes theater: the performance of certainty without its substance.
The looping bee is not pretending to possess a map. It is generating information through movement.
That distinction feels important in a culture that has made decisiveness into a personality trait.
We admire people who say they always knew what they wanted. We ask children what they plan to become, as though a life should first be solved conceptually and only afterward lived. We construct biographies backward, editing out uncertainty so that every early interest appears to have predicted the eventual destination.
The result is a mythology of the straight line.
Of course, very few lives are actually lived that way.
Exploration and Exploitation
There is a problem in computer science and behavioral ecology known as the exploration–exploitation trade-off.
The wording is inelegant, but the dilemma is familiar.
Do you return to the restaurant you already know is good, or try the new place that might be better? Do you continue using a method that reliably works, or spend time testing alternatives? Do you remain in the city, career, relationship, or routine you understand, or risk discovering that another possibility suits you more?
Exploitation means using knowledge you already possess.
Exploration means accepting some uncertainty in order to acquire new knowledge.
Too much exploitation and the world contracts around what you happened to discover first. Too much exploration and you never remain anywhere long enough to benefit from what you learn.
Bees move between these modes.
Their early flights are exploratory. They examine their surroundings, enlarge the area they know, and build the visual familiarity necessary for navigation. With experience, their flights become far more direct. Radar-tracked bumblebees that initially traveled in complex loops later departed along defined routes toward forage and returned directly to the nest.
They earn the bee-line through wandering.
And when a known resource disappears, they do not keep repeating the old route indefinitely. They search again.
The bee is neither a committed nomad nor a creature of pure habit. It changes strategies when its knowledge changes.
This may be the wisest part.
The Shame of Looping
I think humans are taught to be embarrassed by the exploratory portions of our lives.
We celebrate the promotion but not the years of uncertainty preceding it. We admire the finished work and compress the abandoned versions into a charming anecdote. We treat changing direction as evidence that the previous direction was a mistake.
I have moved between countries, professions, projects, and different ideas of what my own life was supposed to become. More than once, I have looked backward at those movements and wondered whether a person with greater discipline would have drawn a cleaner line.
The bee suggests another interpretation.
Perhaps some of the looping was how the landscape became visible.
The years of trying unrelated things may not have been unrelated from inside the life that was learning through them. A return to an earlier interest may not be regression. A period that produced no obvious destination may still have enlarged the map.
This is not an argument that every wrong turn is secretly correct, or that planning is pointless. Bees do not wander forever. Once they possess reliable information, they use it.
The lesson is not that direct paths are bad.
It is that direct paths usually depend on knowledge acquired less directly.
We see someone moving confidently toward a destination and assume confidence came first. Often, what came first was circling, testing, retreating, observing, and learning which landmarks could be trusted.
The straight line may be the final expression of knowledge created by the loop.
When the Old Map Stops Working
There is another moment in which wandering becomes necessary: when the world changes faster than the map.
A familiar city becomes unaffordable. A profession is transformed by technology. A relationship ends. An institution disappears. A version of the future that once seemed reliable is removed as suddenly as a feeder lifted from the grass.
The temptation is to keep following the old route.
Familiar motion can feel like purpose even when it leads toward something that is no longer there.
The searching bee does something more difficult. It treats the disappearance as new information.
It begins locally, because the thing may still be nearby. Then it widens the search. It makes movements that would look irrational if the old map remained accurate, but become rational precisely because it does not.
There is dignity in admitting that the environment has changed.
There is also dignity in becoming exploratory again.
We tend to imagine adulthood as the gradual replacement of uncertainty with certainty. The older we become, the more complete the map should be. To start looping again can therefore feel like failure.
But no living system receives one final, permanent understanding of the world.
Landscapes change. Resources move. Weather intervenes. Bodies age. Desires become clearer or less clear. The search must sometimes restart—not because the searcher learned nothing, but because reality continued moving.
What I Took Back Inside
Eventually, the bee left the part of the garden I could see.
Perhaps it found what it wanted. Perhaps it remembered where it was going. Perhaps my entire philosophical interpretation had nothing to do with its afternoon.
That possibility seems healthy.
The natural world does not arrange itself into lessons for us. Bees are not tiny motivational speakers. Their behavior evolved for their survival, not for the improvement of my attitude toward an untidy résumé.
But metaphors do not need permission from their subjects.
I had watched something move without apparent directness and assumed it lacked a plan. The science showed me that looping can itself be a sophisticated response to limited knowledge.
A small creature in an uncertain environment does not wait for perfect information. It learns by moving. When it knows enough, it travels directly. When what it knows becomes unreliable, it explores again.
That is not indecision.
It is intelligence adapted to reality.
The long Estonian evening was still refusing to end when I went back inside. The light remained across the garden, although the bee had disappeared into it.
I felt slightly less embarrassed by all the routes in my own life that had curved, doubled back, or ended somewhere other than where I thought they would.
Maybe a straight line is not proof that we have found our purpose.
Maybe it is what becomes possible after enough careful circling.
And maybe getting lost on purpose is simply exploration that has not yet finished teaching us where home is.
