Italy Begins 2026 World Cup Qualifying Campaign Against Norway
Date: March 23, 2025
As preparations ramp up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Italy’s national football team, known as the Azzurri, is set to begin their qualifying campaign on June 6, 2025, with an away match against Norway. This match marks the start of Italy's journey in Group I, which also includes Estonia, Moldova, and Israel.
Exit from Nations League
Italy's qualifying path follows their recent exit from the UEFA Nations League, where they faced Germany in a decisive semi-final. The Azzurri lost the first leg at San Siro 2-1 and were unable to overcome this deficit in the return match, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw in Dortmund. Consequently, Germany advanced to the Final Four tournament, which they will be hosting in June.
The loss in the Nations League ultimately positioned Italy in Group I for the World Cup qualifiers. Teams that reached the Final Four were allocated into smaller qualifying groups, providing Italy with a clearer route ahead.
Qualifying Schedule
Italy’s qualifying campaign will kick off with the match against Norway in Oslo, where they will face off against one of the standout players in international football, Erling Haaland. Following this crucial match, Italy will return home to play Moldova on June 9. Later in the year, Italy will host Estonia on September 5 before competing against Israel on neutral ground on September 8. The team will again travel to Estonia on October 11 and will host Israel on October 14. The qualifying series will wrap up with an away match in Moldova on November 13 and a home fixture against Norway on November 16. ### Path to the World Cup
Only the top team from Group I will secure direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Teams finishing as runners-up will enter a playoff process in March 2026, providing another chance to qualify for the prestigious tournament.
As the Azzurri gear up for their qualifying journey, fans remain hopeful for a successful campaign that will lead Italy back to the World Cup stage.
