June 11, 2025 – By Defence Industry Europe
On June 10, the Latvian Ministry of Defence formalized an agreement with Sweden to procure 18 Archer 8x8 wheeled self-propelled artillery systems for the Latvian National Armed Forces. This letter of intent, signed by Major General Andis Dilāns and Swedish National Armaments Director Göran Mårtensson, represents a pivotal moment in defense collaboration between the two countries.
Commitment to Strengthening Regional Security
Latvian Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating, “The agreement between Sweden and Latvia marks a significant step in closer defence cooperation between the two countries. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to strengthening regional security and deterrence, especially in these geopolitically challenging times.”
The signed document outlines a mutual intention to develop a full intergovernmental agreement in the near future, which will govern the specifics of the defense partnership and the terms of supply.
Future Defense Collaborations
In addition to the procurement of the Archer systems, the agreement signals plans for further collaboration. It includes discussions to form a joint 6x6 wheeled artillery unit and guide joint training exercises for military personnel from both nations. These efforts aim to ensure both countries work closely together to enhance their military readiness and capabilities.
Interim Operational Support
To maintain operational readiness during the transition until the new artillery systems are delivered, the Swedish armed forces will provide leasing options for Latvia. This interim arrangement is designed to ensure that Latvia’s defense capabilities remain intact while awaiting the new equipment, with initial deliveries scheduled to commence in 2026. ### Conclusion
This initiative underscores Latvia's commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and fostering international partnerships, particularly as regional security dynamics evolve. The collaboration with Sweden not only strengthens Latvia’s defense posture but also emphasizes a broader regional approach to security in the face of contemporary challenges.
