Norway to Begin Shutdown of 2G Network This Autumn

In a significant move toward modernizing communication technology, Norway will begin shutting down its 2G network this autumn. This decision marks the end of an era for a network that has served the country for over 30 years. In preparation for this transition, the country's two largest mobile operators, Telia and Telenor, have launched a collaborative campaign to facilitate the shift to newer technologies.

Transition to Newer Technology

To assist both individuals and businesses during this change, Telia and Telenor have introduced a dedicated website, www.byttnettnå.no. The site will serve as a comprehensive resource, providing answers to common questions related to the technology switch. Both companies aim to inform users about the implications of the 2G shutdown and the benefits of upgrading to modern networks such as 4G, 5G, and fiber connectivity.

The shutdown of the 2G network is expected to have widespread implications. Devices currently relying on this technology will become inoperable, impacting diverse sectors, including individuals, businesses, municipalities, organizations, and suppliers. For over a decade, mobile operators have communicated their plans to phase out 2G networks, beginning sequentially in 2025. ## Timeline for Shutdown

Telia has announced that it will begin its 2G network shutdown in August 2025. Telenor plans to follow suit, starting its shutdown on December 31, 2027. This timeline allows both companies to ensure a smooth transition, particularly for vital services such as health and care systems that use security alarms and other connected devices.

Birgitte Engebretsen, CEO of Telenor Norway, emphasized the importance of this collaborative effort. "Both Telia and we already have good and ongoing dialogue with our customers about the closure of the 2G network," she stated. "Part of the reason why we are now joining forces is not least because we want to reach customer groups that we do not necessarily have an overview of or are in direct contact with."

Ensuring a Smooth Transition

Morten Karlsen Sørby, Acting CEO of Telia Norway, highlighted the necessity of informing customers about the consequences of the 2G closure. "When both Telia and Telenor close the 2G network, these and other 2G services will stop working," he noted. "Through the joint website, we want to ensure that affected customer groups receive the best possible information about the 2G closure and the importance of checking their equipment."

As both companies continue to monitor developments in Europe regarding network transitions, their primary focus remains on ensuring that users are prepared for the upcoming changes. With the shared goal of facilitating a smooth transition to advanced technologies, Telia and Telenor aim to reduce the risk of disruptions in critical services and connectivity.
