Norwegian Foreign Minister Visits Kyiv to Reaffirm Support for Ukraine
Norway Strengthens Commitment Amid Ongoing Conflict
Kyiv, Ukraine — Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide emphasized his country’s unwavering support for Ukraine during his recent visit to the Ukrainian capital. Arriving in Kyiv amid ongoing attacks by Russian forces, Eide called the situation in Ukraine "the most serious European and Norwegian security challenge of our time."
Eide's visit coincided with reported Russian missile and drone strikes targeting Ukrainian towns, underscoring the urgent need for international solidarity in the face of aggression. He traveled alongside Tonje Brenna, the Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion, aiming to showcase Norway's commitment to Ukraine's defense and recovery.
“The support from Norway is more important than ever,” Eide stated, highlighting that Ukraine is currently at a critical juncture. He reminded observers of the deep-rooted impacts of Russia's actions on both European and Norwegian security, noting, “Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine has turned European security thinking upside down and created the biggest threat against European and Norwegian security in many decades.”
As a neighboring country to Russia, Norway is acutely aware of the implications of the conflict. Eide noted that military forces stationed close to the Norwegian border play a role in Russia’s ongoing offensive against Ukraine. This proximity heightens concerns over Russian ambitions in the region and reinforces Norway's commitment to support its eastern neighbor.
Norway has recently announced plans to significantly increase its financial assistance to Ukraine. In early March, the government disclosed an increase in support for the year 2025 to 85 billion kroner (approximately €7.24 billion). This increase reflects the urgent need for interventions aimed at fostering stability and aiding recovery in Ukraine.
Eide and the Norwegian government have been vocal in their commitment to Ukraine, stating, “Norway is with Ukraine all the way to victory.” This sentiment was reinforced during Eide’s visit as he expressed gratitude for Ukraine's resilience in the face of adversity. “We will stand with the Ukrainians until peace comes and until the country is rebuilt,” he assured, emphasizing Europe’s solidarity with Ukraine.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to develop, Norway’s government remains steadfast in its support, reinforcing its solidarity with the Ukrainian people and their fight for sovereignty and peace.
