Sweden Enhances Armored Forces with Stridsvagn 122 Tank Modernization Contract
June 14, 2025 - By Defence Industry Europe
In a significant move to enhance its military capabilities, Sweden has signed a contract with the German-French defense company KNDS for the modernization of 110 Stridsvagn 122 main battle tanks. The Stridsvagn 122, developed according to Swedish specifications based on the Leopard 2A5 platform, will be upgraded to the more advanced Stridsvagn 123 A standard, which aligns with the Leopard 2A8 specifications.
Modernization Details and Timeline
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has initiated the modernization work, aiming for completion by 2031. As part of this upgrade, the Swedish Army is set to receive a total of 154 modernized Stridsvagn 123 tanks in both A and B variants. The first deliveries of the modernized tanks are expected to commence in 2027, with subsequent deliveries continuing through 2031. #### New Tank Orders
In addition to the modernization efforts, FMV previously secured a separate agreement with KNDS in January 2025 for the delivery of 44 new Leopard 2A8 tanks. These new tanks, designated as Stridsvagn 123 B, will be specifically adapted to meet Swedish military requirements. Notably, these tanks will replace ten vehicles that Sweden had previously donated to support Ukraine.
Deliveries of the new Stridsvagn 123 B tanks are anticipated to begin in 2028, with the final batch also scheduled for delivery by 2031. #### Key Upgrades in the Stridsvagn 123 A and B Variants
The modernization of the Stridsvagn 123 A will involve comprehensive updates to almost all electronic components, thus standardizing the systems with those found in the Leopard 2A8 model. Among the key enhancements are a new combat control system, upgraded gunner and commander sights, and an advanced night vision device for the driver.
Both the Stridsvagn 123 A and B variants will be equipped with the Rheinmetall Rh-120/L55A1 120mm gun, featuring an ammunition programming system and enhanced ballistics due to its extended 55-calibre barrel. While the Stridsvagn 123 B will benefit from a completely new chassis, engine, and transmission, the upgraded Stridsvagn 123 A will maintain the existing drivetrain from the Stridsvagn 122. #### Conclusion
This contract marks a crucial step in strengthening Sweden’s armored capabilities, ensuring that the Swedish Army can effectively address contemporary defense challenges. The phased delivery of modernized and new tanks will enhance operational readiness and interoperability with NATO forces.
