Sweden Aims for 5% NATO Defense Spending Target, Confirms Defense Minister
Stockholm, Sweden – May 31, 2025
Sweden is making significant strides toward meeting its NATO defense spending target, according to Defense Minister Pal Jonson. Speaking to Bloomberg, Jonson outlined the country's plans to enhance military expenditures ahead of the upcoming NATO summit scheduled to take place in The Hague.
Jonson stated that Sweden is on a "trajectory" to allocate 3.5% of its budget for direct military expenditures. In addition, he noted that 1.5% will be directed toward military-related defense spending, culminating in a total of 5% of the national budget being committed to defense initiatives.
"We stand ready to shoulder the responsibility," Jonson emphasized, indicating Sweden's commitment to fulfilling its obligations as a NATO member. This proposed increase in military spending comes amid heightened security concerns in Europe, prompting NATO countries to reassess their defense strategies.
Sweden's military enhancement plan aligns with NATO's ongoing discussions regarding defense preparedness and resource allocation. As regional tensions persist, the commitment from Sweden represents a proactive approach to strengthening collective defense efforts among member states.
The details of Sweden’s defense spending plans will be closely watched in the coming weeks as NATO leaders gather to finalize agreements at the summit.
