Human Error Cited in Fatal DHL Cargo Plane Crash in Lithuania
Vilnius, Lithuania – March 26, 2025
A recent pre-trial investigation has concluded that human error was the likely cause of the fatal crash of a DHL cargo plane near Vilnius International Airport last November. The accident claimed the life of a Spanish crew member but, fortunately, there were no injuries reported on the ground.
The incident occurred on November 25, 2024, when the Boeing 737 cargo plane, on its approach to the airport, veered off the designated flight path and collided with a house. Surveillance footage captured the aircraft initially descending normally before a sudden explosion erupted behind a nearby building just before dawn.
The Lithuanian prosecutor general's office released a statement detailing that investigators identified disabling hydraulic systems related to the deployment of the plane's flaps as a probable factor in the crash. Following the accident, authorities conducted extensive interviews in Lithuania and carried out inspections at the crash site. They also analyzed the flight data recorders to gather more information regarding the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Further investigations have prompted Lithuanian authorities to reach out to their Spanish counterparts, requesting that a “notice of suspicion” be issued to the pilot involved. The pilot is currently receiving medical treatment in Spain, and this notice will allow investigators to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
Prosecutors are considering several potential charges, which may include negligent action resulting in death, destruction of property, inadequate aircraft maintenance, and causing serious harm through illegal activities. As part of their ongoing investigation, authorities have identified 16 individuals as victims of the crash, although specific details about these individuals have yet to be disclosed.
The investigation continues, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
