Made in Finland, sold abroad as Mobile 101, turns the worst year in a struggling electronics company's history into six hours of unexpectedly tense television. The history underneath it — a vanished Soviet market, 18.9 percent unemployment, and a phone that carried a quarter of a decade's growth — is the part North American audiences were never told. And the series still has no North American home.

Estonia spent about €10 million on e-Residency in 2025 and returned €124.9 million to the treasury. It spent €47,471.75 helping Estonians move home, means-tested at half the subsistence threshold. Estonian citizens are not eligible for e-Residency at all. The country closed its consulates general in New York and San Francisco in 2024, opened five new embassies elsewhere in 2025, and the grant round that has preserved diaspora archives since 2011 ends this year.

A whole literature was written on this continent in Norwegian, Icelandic, Finnish, Latvian and Estonian — four thousand Estonian exile titles alone. American literary studies is organised by language and won't take it. Homeland literary studies is organised by territory and won't either. The Baltic half got rescued in 1991. The Nordic half is still sitting there.

Finland is in NATO. Sweden is in NATO. And in the middle of the northern Baltic sits an archipelago of 30,952 people that no armed force may fortify, garrison or land on — under four overlapping treaties, the oldest signed in 1856, none of which contains a way out. Finland's own legal review concluded there is no clean exit even from the Russian consulate clause.
